Ravello, Amalfi Coast, Italy
Holidays to the Amalfi Coast, Italy
On the top of the long list of beautiful Italian destinations is the enchanting Amalfi Coast. Just south of Naples in the Campania region, the Amalfi Coast is a 34-mile strip of the Sorrentine Peninsula, where thirteen seaside towns are nestled into the cliffs along the Mediterranean coast. Terraced vineyards and precipitous villages overlook turquoise waters, inspiring everyone who visits to return again. Settled by seafarers, the region’s intimate relationship with the Mediterranean can be seen in each of the thirteen towns, with local fishermen bringing in a daily catch and fresh seafood offered at every good local restaurant.
Visit Sorrento, the gateway to this spectacular coast, perched on top of vertical cliffs, before making your way to fashionable Capri, where the glitzy world of Mr Ripley lives on. Get off the beaten track in Conca dei Marini, a tiny town at the bottom of sheer cliffs, where you can take a dip in tiny harbours shorn out of the stone. For classical villas, Ravello is hard to beat – Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo offer spectacular gardens and exemplary Mediterranean architecture. Arguably the jewel in the Amalfi Coast’s crown, Positano’s brightly painted houses seem to tumble down into the sea and create the perfect backdrop to savour a glass of limoncello or spend a lazy afternoon on a gozzo boat.
