The Dolomites, Italy
Holidays to the Dolomites, Italy
A perfect destination for lovers of the great outdoors, the Dolomites (in the northern Italian Alps) offer a dramatic landscape of contrasts, with rolling alpine meadows framed by craggy mountains and bright blue skies. With plenty of ski networks and winter adventure sports on offer, this chic Italian ski destination is popular in the cold months (with visitors including the likes of Italian aristocrats and George Clooney). But this UNESCO World Heritage Site isn’t just for those hoping to brush shoulders with celebs or brush up their skills on the black runs. The fresh mountain air and incredible hiking and biking trails make it a beautiful haven all year round.
Many ski lifts remain open throughout the year, making summer adventures accessible for all, from your mini explorers to the thrill seekers. Journey through the region’s mountains and pine forests, discovering lakes and charming towns nestled in the valleys. Great routes for self-guided hikes include the Sentiero Ivano Dibona trail (near Cortina d’Ampezzo) or a walk to the striking green-blue lake of Lago di Braies.
Take to the roads to explore further – mountain passes wind through dramatic scenery, and it’s no surprise that it’s a popular scenic driving route from Venice to Milan and Lake Como. Just take care when reading road signs; you’ll find everything written in two or three languages, and every town has both a German and Italian name!
The food too is a distinct blend of Italian and Austrian influences – think baked cheeses, polenta, smoked ricotta gnocchi, apple strudels and of course the strong local grappa. To truly appreciate the setting, the best places to enjoy this hearty cuisine are of course above 2,000 metres. Visit the cosy refuges perched at the top of the slopes (after a morning of skiing, hiking or biking) and enjoy a long-drawn-out lunch Italian style, with plenty of people around the table, flowing wine, cosy log fires and spectacular panoramas.
If you’re looking to treat yourself, you’ll also find luxurious spa retreats, some only accessible by cable car. Is there any better way to end your day than relaxing in the bubbling hot springs of your hotel? Watch the colours change as the striking peaks are tinged pink at dusk.
Take the year-round cable cars to the top of the peaks to enjoy spectacular views and plenty of hiking trails
Visit the mountaintop restaurants for a warming pit stop and a hearty meal
Enjoy a spot of luxury with Michelin-starred food and bubbling thermal baths in your spa hotel
Hike to the green-hued lake of Lago di Braies for a white sandy beach in the middle of the mountains
