Holidays to Milan, Italy

With Celtic origins dating back to 600 BC, the unfolding of time that has shaped Milan into one of the modern world’s fashion capitals and has left us with a unique array of relics and monuments along the way. Now the industrial and financial capital of Italy, the metropolis juxtaposes a modern skyline with the historic architecture of the Duomo di Milano and Sforza Castle, uniting avant-garde styles with remarkable antiquity.

Spanning an entire city block the 109,641 square feet of Milan’s Duomo is the 5th largest Christian Cathedral ever built. A true must-see for anyone visiting Milan, the cathedral is adorned with over 3,000 statues, the most of any building in the world. Climbing up to the ‘Terrezza’ and standing amid the building’s 135 spires, you will have a close-up view of the golden Madonnina set upon the highest spire, and on a clear day have a view of the snow-capped Alps.

If you’re interested in combining architecture with the infamous Milanese fashion scene, head to the glass-ceilinged Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Walking upon the vibrant mosaiced floors you can hop from one designer’s boutique to the next, indulging the newest fashions.

As you move past the main attractions and escape the crowds of tourists, you can take in two artists very different depiction of ‘love’. Visit L.O.V.E. (‘Libertà, Odio, Vendetta, Eternità’), located in Piazza Affari, a sculpture and clear message to Italian bankers by artist Maurizia Cattelan. Then, head to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana and read Lucrezia Borgia’s love letters, deemed by Lord Byron as “the prettiest love letters in the world”.

Come to Milan to visit these extraordinary sights, then take the short journey to the spectacular Italian lake district. With Lake Como and Maggiore both only about an hour’s drive away, this region is ideal for those who want a mix of high energy city-life, and serene relaxation in some of the most beautiful nature in Europe.
