Sunrise Visit to the Taj Mahal, Agra

An early start is required to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise, but it’s very much worth it because as the first rays of sun hit the marble of the mausoleum it truly is breath-taking. Depending on where you’re staying you’ll either walk to the gates or take one of the electric buggies with your local guide who will meet you at your hotel in Agra.

Excitement mounts as you join the queue of people who too have arisen in the small hours to see the Taj at this special time of day. As you wait patiently for the gates to be opened chat with fellow travellers to see how far others have travelled to witness this Indian Wonder of the World.

Regardless of how many photos and postcards of the Taj Mahal you might have seen over the years, there’s no doubt that the first glimpse of it in real life is something special. As you walk around the landscaped gardens your guide will give you the history of the monument and you’ll learn how it was a labour of love by the Emperor at the time for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, when she died. After your guide has taken you inside be sure to find a quiet spot to spend a few minutes soaking up the sheer splendour of the monument.

Let's talk
I spent almost a year living in India, volunteering and exploring, and this vibrant corner of the world always draws me back. I was once caught up in a local paint-throwing festival in Udaipur. We came away covered head to toe in red paint, but the experience was well worth it!
