Holidays to Delhi, India
Widely considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world, legend has it the Indian capital city of Delhi has been built and destroyed 11 times over thousands of years. This layered history is visible throughout the city, but to really get to grips with it, it's best to explore with a knowledgeable local guide. The city is too vast to see everything in one day, but over the course of several days you’ll enjoy exploring a dizzying range of historical sites, lively markets and delicious restaurants.
Home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Delhi has plenty to offer. Start with the Red Fort in Old Delhi which gets its name from the stunning red sandstone façade. Built in 1648 the fort stands on foundations which contain the decapitated remains of prisoners, which at the time was thought to bring good fortune. While time has stripped the fort of many precious objects, it’s well worth visiting to marvel at its sheer scale and and wander around its lush gardens.
In New Delhi you’ll find Humayun’s Tomb, another World Heritage Site, which is thought to have inspired the Taj Mahal having been built 60 years before the iconic building. Head to south Delhi to find the third World Heritage Site - Qutab Minar. Built in the early 13thcentury this soaring tower reaches 73m into the sky making it quite the sight. It was built as a sign of victory by Sultan Qutb-ud-din to show his supremacy over the conquered Hindu rulers.
It's also well worth exploring the bustling markets of Chandni Chowk where you can shop for anything and everything including spices, saris and silver jewellery. You'll find some of the best Indian street food in the country here and you might like to order some chaat; a famous north Indian snack food.
