The Blue City and Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, India
Holidays to Jodhpur, India
Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan and is known as being the gateway to the Thar Desert thanks to its desert-fringed position. It’s best known as the Blue City, as most of the houses in the old city are painted in beautiful shades of blue both inside and out.
Inside the city you’ll find a maze of medieval streets punctuated with shops and bazaars selling everything from spices and saris to instruments. The city does wind out beyond the walls, but it’s the buzz of the old Blue City and epic fort that attracts most visitors. Its easy to get lost in the city's narrow passageways, some of which local rickshaws even struggle to travel down, but doing so adds to the fun of exploring this ancient city.
Mehrangarh Fort is the biggest fort in Rajasthan; built in 1458 to be the start of Rao Jodha's new capital. The word fort belies the sheer size of the complex which rises high above the Blue City giving impressive views of the city below. Interestingly in the 500 years that have passed since it was built, the fort has never been taken by force. Perhaps that has something to do with its prime spot atop a 150m high hill or the some 3km of ramparts that surround it.
If you need a break from the hustle and bustle head to Jaswant Thada which was built as a impressive Mausoleum for the Marwar royal family and is set within peaceful gardens.
