Holidays to Udaipur, India

Famed for its luscious lakes, pretty palaces and glorious gardens, it's little surprise that Udaipur is often called the most romantic spot in India. Known as the 'City of the Lakes', Udaipur sits on a series of lakes, the most famous of which is Lake Pichola, and is backed with the beautifully forest-clad Aravalli Hills. Its beauty has also caught the attention of Hollywood and many movies have been filmed here, including the James Bond classic, 'Octopusssy'.

It’s not hard to see why visitors flock to this charming lakeside city. Whether you want to relax on a peaceful boat ride, shop amongst the hustle and bustle of the ancient bazaar or enjoy the local arts scene, there is something for every traveller here.

For history, visit the City Palace - one of the grandest and largest palaces in Rajasthan. Inside you’ll find the City Palace Museum which is comprised of multiple ostentatiously decorated rooms showcasing a wide range of artefacts. Wander along the lakeside of Lake Pichola, an artificial lake that was built in 1362 AD. Over the years marble temples, extravagant mansions and bathing ghats have been built around the lake and on its island. For more natural beauty visit the garden of Saheliyon ki Bari in the northern area of the city; wander past the fountains, lotus pool and beautiful marble elephants. Each water channel has its own sound which creates a unique ambience.

Udaipur is also a great place for some souvenir shopping. The city is well known for its miniature paintings inspired by the style of Rajputs and Mughals, which could make a lovely memento.

When it comes to eating, your taste buds are in for a treat in Udaipur. The city is known for its spiced snacks like mirchi bada (stuffed chilli fritters) and you should also be sure to try Gatte Ki Sabzi while in the city - delicious gram flour dumplings in curry.

Let's talk
I spent almost a year living in India, volunteering and exploring, and this vibrant corner of the world always draws me back. I was once caught up in a local paint-throwing festival in Udaipur. We came away covered head to toe in red paint, but the experience was well worth it!
