Holidays to Bolivia

Landlocked Bolivia borders Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile and Argentina, placing it at the heart of South America. It’s a country of topographical extremes, with the dramatic Andes persisting down the western side of the country and the steamy Amazon Rainforest permeating its way in from the north.

The mesmerising Salar de Uyuni salt flats in the southwest are undoubtedly one of the headliners of Bolivia. It’s a surreal place with flat expanses of cracked salt tiles that go on and on and on for miles. For contrast, head to the wetlands in the northeast where you can spot playful pink dolphins on a river cruise, and sail past settlements of stilted wooden houses that line the riverbanks. Zigzag back west and visit the mystical and serene Lake Titicaca that extends across the border from Peru. On the Bolivian side, the Sun and Moon islands are found, steeped in mythology and home to Inca settlements.

Set high in the Andes, La Paz offers opportunities for paragliding and adrenaline-charged adventures. It's also the de facto capital and is where you’ll come to stroll around streets, absorb the culture and visit eye-opening places like the Witches’ Market where powders and potions are bought according to ancient Andean beliefs. La Paz has an emerging foodie scene that’s worth sticking around for – delicious street stalls are found everywhere but there’s an up and coming restaurant scene, too. Coffee is big business too, and you'll happen upon cafés that roast and blend their own coffee from beans bought from small, local growers.

If you want to test your fitness, the national parks of Madidi and Sajama are the places to do it. The vast landscapes include volcanoes, geysers and cloud forests and, with miles of hiking trails for different abilities. Embark on a trek to the summit of the Nevado Sajama Volcano – the highest peak in Bolivia, towering at 6,549 metres. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, hike to the geysers of Walla Keris, walk the highland lakes or meander through the forested foothills of the Andes.

The time I spent travelling through South and Central America not only allowed me to perfect my Spanish, but also gave me real taste of authentic Latin America. The food, wine, landscapes and wildlife keep me going back for more whenever I can.
