Holidays to Guatemala

Guatemala is a vivacious country in the heart of Central America that's known for its outstanding cultural legacies, diverse nature and pristine scenery. Its growing popularity among travellers and holidaymakers shows no signs of abating. It’s easy to understand why, with its breathtaking landscapes and cultural history reaching back for centuries.

Guatemala is a perfect destination for adventure-seekers. Trek through rainforests in misty Cobán to spot spider monkeys and exotic parakeets, or take to the river for serious white-water rafting on thundering rapids. There are miles of caves to explore if you like your adventure on the dark and exhilarating side, and zip lines if you prefer whooshing through the air for an aerial view.

It’s not all adrenaline-charged escapades though. The Western Highlands are the birthplace of the ancient Maya people, and their culture is still very much alive here today. Don’t miss Tikal, a towering temple in the jungle, or stop by the Ixil Triangle and enjoy the hiking opportunities alongside your historic and cultural discoveries. Visit Lake Atitlán, where you'll have the chance to scale a volcano; visit coffee plantations or just sit back and soak up the incredible scenery.

On the coast, the relaxed town of Montericco offers up impressive black sand beaches lined with friendly beach bars, where you can while away the days in a hammock. Its also a popular nesting site for endangered turtles; visit between July-December and you'll have the chance to help the locals release the tiny turtles into the sea to protect them from predators.

The original capital, Antigua, usually trumps the modern capital of Guatemala City for urban explorations. In Antigua, spend time walking the cobbled streets from market to market, admiring the faded beauty of the colonial architecture and the bougainvillea-filled courtyards. In Guatemala City you'll find galleries, museums and the iconic National Palace, or head south and take in the vistas from Pacaya volcano.
