Holidays to Cuzco, Peru

Once the heart of the Inca Empire, today charming Cuzco is one of Peru's most visited cities. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s a popular starting point for travellers visiting Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and plenty of other notable Inca sites in the region.

Wander the streets and you’ll soak up its history without even having to try; the city is a blend of Inca and Spanish influences. However in the 1950s a huge earthquake hit Cuzco bringing many Spanish buildings to the ground, revealing the strong Inca walls beneath them.

Here you’ll find a thriving indigenous culture, bright traditional textiles and fiestas and carnivals aplenty. Like many Peruvian cities, life here radiates outward from the main square. The plaza in Cuzco is constantly humming with activity; enjoy a plate of traditional Aji de gallina (spicy creamed chicken), buy handmade crafts and alpaca clothing from street vendors or simply watch daily life from one of the colourful gardens. History buffs and culture vultures should be sure to check out the Cuzco Cathedral and the Church La Compañía de Jesús.

Shoppers should put San Pedro Market on their list; boasting over 200 stalls you’ll find everything from touristy hats to freshly squeezed juice. If all that shopping has tired you out, treat yourself to a massage which only cost around 15 soles for an hour. When the sun fades, Cuzco’s nightlife comes alive. Play pool and sip a local Cusqueña beer or amp things up at some of the buzzing clubs and lounges dotted around the plaza. If you want to get away from the main drag, head up many cobblestone stairs to reach San Blas. This chic corner of Cuzco is packed full of bohemian boutiques, charming cafes and offers tremendous views over the city.

The time I spent travelling through South and Central America not only allowed me to perfect my Spanish, but also gave me real taste of authentic Latin America. The food, wine, landscapes and wildlife keep me going back for more whenever I can.
