Holidays to Iquitos, Peru

Accessible by air and water, Iquitos is the world’s largest city that can't be reached by road. It rather sums up this quirky, bustling jungle city full of charm and oddities, found in the north of Peru. Take a walk through the city and discover the colourful mansions originally owned by the rubber barons of the early 20th century. Whilst the city does have its charms, most come for the easy access to the Northern Peruvian Amazon which can be explored by cruise, treks or lodge stays.

Spend a few days getting to know the city before diving straight into the jungle and you’ll be handsomely rewarded. Spend your time sipping fresh juice in a riverside café, grab a cooling ice-cream in the main square or indulge in some of the city’s thriving nightlife. Be sure to visit the epic market at the floating shantytown of Belén where you can try some delicious jungle delicacies. Known by travellers as ‘The Venice of the Peruvian Jungle’, it’s best enjoyed early in the morning when it’s most active.

Once you’ve explored the city, it’s into the jungle you go. The northern Amazon basin is raw and real jungle territory, and home to the Amazon River which wells up from the depths of the rainforest before passing through Brazil to the Atlantic Ocean. By visiting the Iquitos region of Peru you’ll be able to cruise along the ‘real’ Amazon River and not a tributary. The river is home to many species not found in the smaller tributaries including rare pink river dolphins.  Off the river there's plenty of other jungle fun to be had, from hiking, walking across the tree-top canopy and visiting a local community.

Let's talk
I’m a landscape buff, so love Peru for its combination of deserts, snow-capped Andes and Amazon jungle. I’ll never forget experiencing sunrise at Machu Picchu – I climbed 3,000 steps in the dark to get there in time, but the colours of the morning light were definitely worth it!
