Holidays to Lima, Peru

The capital of Peru and the country’s largest city, Lima is often called Latin America’s best-kept secret. Combine its rich pre-Columbian heritage, sweeping ocean vistas and emerging arts scene and it’s not hard to see why. Here edgy art and nightclub beats jostle for attention with solemn religious processions and fascinating museum. The result is an eclectic city with truly something for everyone.

Whatever your interests, be sure to spend time in the city’s historical centre and its main square, which boasts finely preserved colonial architecture and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also a great base for exploring surrounding places of interest like the epic Cathedral - check out the paintings in the rear museum - and the stately Government Palace, the official residence and office of Peru's president.

The oldest city in the Americas is also something of a gastro powerhouse thanks to its home-grown talent, plentiful native ingredients and exceptionally good seafood. You’ll find an excellent selection of fish restaurants in the seafood district of Miraflores. Be sure to try some pisco – Peruvian brandy made from grapes – while you’re here too.

You’ll find a range of manicured parks to recline in should you need a breather from the city. Our pick is Park of the Reserve, head there after dark to catch the delightful choreography of water and lights set to a soundtrack of everything from traditional Peruvian waltzes to ABBA!

Shopaholics could do worse than a visit to Larco mall which boasts an excellent food court, global brands and views of the Pacific Ocean. Bargain hunters should head to Gamarra market which with over 20,000 shops and mini factories is considered the biggest of its kind in South America.

Immerse yourself in the local culture with a museum visit or two. There are plenty to choose from; Lima Art Museum is pretty comprehensive and you can trace 3,000 years of history from the earliest Andean civilizations until modern times through its extensive art collection. And from jazz clubs and sophisticated gin bars to live music venues and buzzing night clubs, there is a memorable night out for every taste in Lima.

The time I spent travelling through South and Central America not only allowed me to perfect my Spanish, but also gave me real taste of authentic Latin America. The food, wine, landscapes and wildlife keep me going back for more whenever I can.
