Suriyakantha Cultural Centre, Kandy
If you’d like to learn about the history of Sri Lanka in a friendly, unusual way – this is the tour for you. You’ll head to a gorgeous 200-year-old Dutch style house nestled in the lush hilly village of Naranwala. Here you’ll meet the owner, Dr Jacques Soulie, who moved here from Toulouse 20 years ago.
Once a psychiatrist, he is now an avid historian as you will see when you explore his estate which is part home, part museum. Over the course of your visit he’ll show you around his collection of fascinating Sri Lankan and colonial artefacts including paintings, photographs and weapons from the 18th century.
Check out the water buffalo horn with coconut shell, which was once used by monks to wash their feet. He also owns an excellent collection of folk art objects as well as an impressive collection of books including original editions and a handful of original Ola leaf manuscripts. Having spent a large chunk of his life in the country studying and collecting artefacts, Dr Soulie is incredibly knowledgeable and makes for an excellent private tour guide. Once you have finished with the tour you will be invited to take tea out in his beautiful garden.
