Nicaragua links Honduras in the north to Costa Rica in the south and is flanked by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It’s earned the nickname 'Land of Lakes and Volcanoes', but frankly, that doesn’t do it justice. We’d sooner call it ‘Land of Lakes, Volcanoes, Colonial Cities, Rainforests, Beaches, Rivers and Wildlife’ – except it’s not so catchy.
León is reputedly the oldest city in all of Central America. It has a splendid cathedral and an illuminating museum to help you get accustomed to the history of Nicaragua. It is crumbly colonialism and cosmopolitan in equal measure, with passionate residents and vivacious artwork. Another city worthy of your time is Granada, where you can ramble the cobblestone streets and spy the burnt orange and terracotta roofs of the beautifully restored Spanish colonial architecture. Keep up your explorations on a visit to the immense and iconic Concepción Volcano on Ometepe Island. There are walking trails, a butterfly sanctuary and few hot springs dotted around the foothills, and more challenging hikes for serious explorers too.
If you like a good dose of adventure, Nicaragua is a dream destination. Zip line through the rainforests around Matagalpa, then hike through the jungle, keeping your eyes peeled for howler monkeys and the secretive quetzal on the way. Spend a night or two amidst the cloud forests of northern Nicaragua, or discover the countryside on horseback, visiting coffee plantations and finding out the origins of your daily cappuccino.
For some well-deserved R&R, the teeny Corn Islands on Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast is where you can dive and snorkel to your heart’s content before resurfacing to an almost deserted beach. Or, head to the Pacific Coast instead where the surfing is incredible. Spend some time in laid-back San Juan Del Sur that’s enjoying its moment in the limelight as one of Nicaragua’s trendiest destinations.
