Holidays to Colca Valley, Peru

The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest in the world, so it’s no surprise it’s one of Peru’s most-visited tourist destinations. Yet despite its popularity, this area still retains a vibrant indigenous culture. Keen hikers can choose from a number of different routes which weave through the mountains, past rural villages and through pre-Hispanic ruins. Along your walk you’ll pass beautiful lakes, spot stunning native flora and fauna and admire views of the volcanoes which run opposite to the valley. If you want even more of a challenge you can also have a go at climbing the volcanoes of El Misti and Chachani.

For the best view head to Cruz del Condor which will give you a fantastic sense of the depth of the canyon. As the name suggests, it’s also the best location to spot Andean Condors throughout the year. You won’t miss them in the sky - these huge birds weigh up to 33 pounds and boast an impressive 10-foot wingspan!

Most people arrive in Chivay, a friendly town at the start of the Canyon, offering a range of accommodation and restaurants. It’s also a great spot for picking up high-quality local crafts including 100% alpaca clothing and embroidered goods. As you spend time exploring the Colca you’ll notice that the region's scenery shifts dramatically; from the ancient farmland of Yanque to the warmer climes in the canyon where peaches and avocado are grown.

With pre-Inca roots, this Andean valley is still inhabited by people of the Collagua and the Cabana cultures. Today the two groups distinguish themselves by distinctively shaped hats and traditional clothing which denote their ancestry.
