Holidays to Puerto Maldonado, Peru

The beating heart capital of the Southern Peruvian Amazon, Puerto Maldonado is the starting point for many a rainforest adventure for explorers in Peru. Spanning 4.5 million acres of Andean highlands, cloud forests and lowland jungle, Manu National Park is a pristine region and often regarded as the best place for watching wildlife in the Amazon rainforest. Wandering through this section of the rainforest you can expect to see animals including monkeys, turtles, otters, black caimans and maybe even a jaguar! It’s also a birdwatcher’s paradise boasting over 800 species including macaws.

Another excellent wildlife watching spot is Tambopata National Reserve which spans 3.8 million acres of savannahs and rainforest. Created by the government in 1989, this zone is both an extractive reserve and preserved for eco-tourism. Here you can learn about the conservation efforts as well as human impact on the rainforest. The Tambopata River runs through this reserve and visitors can kayak along it for a different perspective which is particularly great for photography lovers. Head up the observation tower at Sandoval Lake for stunning views across the lake and wetlands which are home to river otters and black caimans.

If it’s culture you love, then spend the day with a local community, visit a farm and learn about the cultivation process of the crops, or even take part in the chocolate production process at a cacao plantation.

  • Spot black caimans, jaguars and monkeys in the biodiverse Amazon jungle, and encounter nocturnal animals on a twilight trek

  • Visit the villages of indigenous tribes like the Ese'eja tribe to learn about their fascinating culture and customs

  • Hop into a canoe at sunrise and watch the rainforest come to life as you glide through the tributaries and streams

The time I spent travelling through South and Central America not only allowed me to perfect my Spanish, but also gave me real taste of authentic Latin America. The food, wine, landscapes and wildlife keep me going back for more whenever I can.
