The time I spent travelling through South and Central America not only allowed me to perfect my Spanish, but also gave me real taste of authentic Latin America. The food, wine, landscapes and wildlife keep me going back for more whenever I can.

Cartagena

City

Your laidback adventure begins with you jetting off to the Colombian capital Bogota overnight and catching a connecting flight to the historic Caribbean port of Cartagena. You’ll be met at the airport by your driver and English-speaking guide who will take you to where you'll be based for the next few days, the Tcherassi Hotel and Spa. It’s an elegant refurbished colonial mansion in the picturesque Old Town owned by fashion designer Sylvia Tcherassi. Unpack, unwind and settle into your superior room.

On the morning of Day 3 you’ll enjoy a half-day panoramic tour of Cartagena. This excursion includes entry to San Felipe castle, built by the Spanish to fend off British attacks. You’ll also visit San Pedro church and the Iglesia de la Popa, a convent and church built by Augustine monks at the start of the 17th century. You’ll get some fantastic views of the picturesque walled city and the Caribbean coast as you travel around.

On your last full day in Cartagena, you’ll get to indulge your taste buds with a half-day street food tour of the city. Fill up on exotic fruits such as papaya and granadilla, as well as griddled patties arepas and papas rellenas – a sort of deep-fried shepherd’s pie. Along the way, you’ll meet many of the local characters that bring the neighbourhoods to life.

5-8

Tayrona

Beach

It’s time to get back to nature as you travel by car to the windswept beaches of Tayrona, backed by lush tropical rainforest. You’ll lodge at Ecohabs on Cañaveral beach within Tayrona National Park, enjoying the peace and privacy provided by these cosy stilted wooden huts nestled on a leafy hillside overlooking the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. Nod off to the sounds of the jungle and wake up to the waves lapping the shore below.

You’ll spend the rest of your holiday at your leisure. You could take a long walk down the coast to explore the pristine beaches or just sit back and gaze out over the lush forest landscape. The park has a rich cultural history, being home to the ancient Tayrona tribes who roamed here long before it was colonised by the Spanish. It’s also teeming with wildlife, including howler monkeys, iguanas, toucans and the basilisk lizard, also known as the Jesus Christ lizard for its ability to walk on water. We can arrange an optional tour for you to go hiking or horse riding in the park if you want to get active on your holiday. It’s also possible for you to have dinner on the beach - the sunsets here are pretty spectacular.

All good things must come to an end unfortunately, and on Day 9 you’ll fly back to Bogota ready for your return home, fully recharged and relaxed from your chilled-out trip to Colombia.
