Holidays to Crescent Island Game Park, Kenya
A holiday to Crescent Island Game Park offers a spectacular opportunity to walk amongst to a diverse array of animals in this stunning private island sanctuary.
Nestled on the banks of Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Rift Valley, film fans may recognise Crescent Island Game Park as a set from Out Of Africa. Wildlife was imported into the peninsula for filming and left to thrive. Uniquely for a safari location, this means there’s an absence of predators and the animals are gentle and used to visitors, without feeling threatened.
Travelling to Crescent Island is a treat in itself. As you cross Lake Naivasha by boat, the rich blue sky seems to fade into the placid water against a backdrop of distant hills. You'll see hippos grazing or resting in the water – merely the first up-close encounter in the exploration ahead.
Once on dry land, you have to option to wander alone or with a knowledgable island guide who can tell you about the animals and their behaviours. It takes approximately a couple of hours to walk around the park. Along the way, you'll encounter many wild animals including zebras, impalas, wildebeest, giraffes, gazelles, antelope, vervet monkeys and hippos. Groups of buffalo sometimes visit, though they are closely monitored. It's also a birdwatcher's paradise with over 200 different species recorded here, including pelicans, fish eagles, giant kingfishers and a variety of herons.
Crescent Island Game Park is a two-hour drive from Nairobi, making it an excellent destination if you fancy an escape from city life. We recommend visiting early in the day to avoid the intense midday heat.
