Holidays to Diani, Kenya

Diani is an hour's flight from Nairobi, but it feels like it's a universe away. This 10-kilometre stretch of flawless white sand merges seamlessly with the lush greenery of the neighbouring African bush. Whether you want to go on a game drive, get involved in some water-sports, or just relax on the beach, Diani is the ideal base for your African adventures. Its picture-perfect shorefront lined with palm trees means it's a gorgeous place to hangout, too.

A lively resort popular with a range of travellers, visitors can find as little or as much activity as they would like. Those wanting to indulge in nothing more than sun, sea and sand will fall in love with the shallow sandbars of Diani beach, and are welcome to laze the days away in a hammock overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

If you're craving a bit more activity during your beach break, it's worth noting that the area is a prime kite-surfing location. Why not give it a go with a beginner's session and experience the ocean from a whole different angle? Or you could choose to explore below the crystalline waters on a snorkelling or diving excursion – you'll be rewarded with a rainbow of coral reefs and a plethora of marine life beneath the surface.

However you won't need to choose between spending time on the beach or seeing Africa's amazing animals in the wild, because Diani is conveniently placed as a base for safari trips into Shimba Hills National Reserve. The ocean-front reserve is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, and boasts the highest density of African elephants in Kenya.

Those who just can't get enough of the indigenous African wildlife can pay a visit to the residents of the Colobus Conservation. The sanctuary protects the threatened Angolan colobus monkey and offers the only primate eco-tour in the country, where visitors are introduced to a range of wild monkeys on a short nature trail. Meanwhile, culture-vultures will enjoy exploring the sacred forest of Kaya Kinondo where they can can experience the culture of the local Digo people.
