Holidays to Malindi, Kenya
Known for its unique cultural fusion, white sandy beaches and historical sights and attractions, the quaint coastal town of Malindi is a must-visit for visitors to Kenya.
What’s really special about Malindi is the fact that it boasts a real melting pot of different cultures. The local Kenyans are not the only inhabitants of the town – you’re bound to run into a few Italians, too. These foreign investors are the main reason why Malindi boasts authentic, traditional architecture, all with a noticeable modern twist.
As soon as you arrive, it’s worth taking a quick look at what the winding streets have to offer as you make your way to your hotel. Once settled and in the mood for an adventure, head off to the Marafa Depression (commonly known as Hell’s Kitchen), which is an eroded sandstone gorge just 30 kilometres northeast of the town centre.
Enjoy a trip to the Malindi Marine National Park. This protected ocean area stretches across 213 square kilometres and promises an up close view of the Indian Ocean's vibrant fish, abundant and textured coral and unique sea creatures.
A must-see is the Vasco da Gama Pillar – a landmark thought to be one of the oldest European monuments in all of Africa. Believed to have been erected by the Portuguese explorer himself sometime during the late 1400s, it's made out of coral and topped off with a cross crafted from Lisbon stone. Truly a majestic sight, the pillar provides a thought-provoking look into the area’s layered history and origins. At the fascinating Gede Ruins not only will you learn about the history of the area and how the ruins came to be, but also of the monkeys and owls that can be spotted amongst the ruins.
