Holidays to Windhoek, Namibia
Windhoek is the first point of call for most visitors to Namibia. The city has been described as being "too European for Africa and too African for Europe", and it is certainly a heady mix of the two cultures. Visitors are presented with a thoroughly modern urban landscape: high rise buildings made of steel and glass, with elements of the country's German colonial past littered around, as well as plenty of uniquely African touches. Whether you're using the capital as a launch pad for exploring wider Namibia, or you're here to experience the city itself, Windhoek is a fascinating gem.
History buffs and culture vultures can enjoy a tour of the sights. It's worth checking out the National Museum, partly to get an understanding of the country and its past, but also for the fabulous irony of it being housed in the Alte Feste, a German-built fort that was once the bastion of colonialism in the city. If colonial architecture is your thing, then head on over to the Christuskirche, the city's oldest church, followed by a stroll through the nearby Parliament Gardens.
Like any modern city, Windhoek has plenty to offer food lovers, with restaurants catering to all budgets. There's a burgeoning trend here for fusion cuisine, blending traditional African dishes with some Teutonic twists. Being a former German colony there is, of course, a brewery in the city that offers tours where visitors can sample the various brews on offer, all made according to the strict Reinheitsgebot beer laws.
For shoppers, the Namibia Craft Centre is a market specialising in local arts and handicrafts and a great place to get souvenirs. Maerua Mall is a large, modern, spacious shopping mall, popular with locals and a Windhoek shopaholic's paradise.
The nearby Daan Viljoen Nature Reserve is a great day trip for animal lovers. Herds of zebras roam the reserve, with giraffes munching away on treetops and gigantic flocks of birds overhead.
