Windhoek walking safari

If you’ve ever fancied tracking big cats on foot, sign up to this tour pronto! You’ll kick off the day in search of cheetahs on foot in a huge nature reserve and finish up with an epic game drive looking for the ever-elusive leopard. This is one for the wildlife lovers!

All this will take place at the Okonjima Nature Reserve, an impressive 200 sq km area home to one of the country’s most exciting conservation efforts; the AfriCat Foundation. Nestled amongst the Ombokoro Mountains this non-profit protects, researches, rescues and rehabilitates large carnivores, like cheetahs, back into the wild.

The Cheetah Rehabilitation project was launched to give captive cheetahs a real opportunity to return to their natural environment. While hunting in carnivores is instinctive, many of the cheetahs at the reserve have had to relearn and hone these skills due to being removed for the wild at a young age. At the reserve they are fitted with radio-collars so that their welfare and progress can be monitored.

On your tour, together with your experienced guide, you’ll use these devices to track the cheetahs on foot. It’s quite a feeling when you spot one! Your tour will finish with a traditional African game drive where you’ll drive through acacia thicket on the lookout for a leopard.
