Holidays to Kigali, Rwanda
Luscious green hillsides with blossoming trees crossing ridges and valleys, winding streets and wide boulevards bustling with activity, Kigali has come a long way since the horrors of the 1994 genocide. It is now taking its place as one of Africa's safest, cleanest and best-looking capital cities.
Kigali's central location within Rwanda makes it ideal to spend a few days here before moving on to the National Parks, Lakes or wherever you may be going. What most visitors overlook, however, are the many splendours offered by Kigali itself. At first, it may seem like a peaceful, sleepy place, but scratch the surface and you will discover the many activities this burgeoning city has to offer.
Sobering as it may be, a trip to the Kigali Genocide Memorial is essential for anyone wishing to get their head around Rwandan history, culture and identity. It is a genuinely moving experience, especially when you consider there are over 250,000 people buried at the site. The Presidential Palace Museum completes the genocide tour. The palace was the home of President Habyarimana whose death in a plane crash in 1994 is widely considered to be the trigger for the horror that came after. The palace gives you a glimpse of life as an African dictator, as well as a deeper understanding of the man behind the national legend.
A walking tour of Nyamirambo is a wonderful experience. It's the city's Muslim quarter and, unlike much of Kigali, the streets are always hustling and bustling. Nyamirambo is also where Kigali's bars are open, day and night, and the energy of the area is like no other place in the city. If you're not feeling up to going alone, the local women's centre offer a guided tour, the proceeds of which help support the centre's upkeep.
For souvenirs, go to Kimironko Market or Inema Art Centre. These busy local markets and their friendly vendors seem to be selling anything and everything a person could want. For those wanting to relax before or after a gorilla trek expedition, sunsets over Mount Kigali with a drink in hand are incredibly simple yet incredibly memorable.
