Holidyas to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, South Africa
Established in 1895, Africa’s oldest game reserve, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, was once ruled by Zulu kings. Evidence of Stone Age settlements exist throughout the park and it is known to have once been a royal hunting ground for the Zulu kingdom. Today though, its prime attraction is the spectacular wildlife and game viewing that can be enjoyed from dedicated viewing hides that overlook waterholes and enable you to get closer to the animals.
The park covers a massive 96,000 hectares and is characterised by rolling hills, winding rivers and trails across the savannah. You can join guided boat trips, day and night drive safaris or can explore on foot with an experienced guide.
Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is occupied by Africa’s Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard) and is also the home of ‘Operation Rhino’, established in the 1950s to protect the endangered white rhino. Thanks to these conservation efforts, the park helped to save the white rhino from the brink of extinction and it now boasts one of the world’s largest populations, with some 1,600 individuals.
There’s plenty more for wildlife lovers too and, in addition to over 320 recorded bird species, there are in fact 86 different species of mammal residing in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. Zebra and giraffe, monkeys and cheetah are just a few. Others, including the Nile crocodile and hippo, can be seen along river banks or during a boat safari allowing you to get much more up close and personal… it’s best to follow advice and keep your arms and legs inside at all times though!
