Cango Caves, Oudtshoorn

The Cango Caves are one of South Africa’s most beautiful hidden treasures. Just 17km outside of the Klein Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, the caves are one of the Garden Routes most exciting, oldest and beautiful tourist attractions.

The Cango Caves are a series of dripstone caverns that open into vast halls of towering stalagmite formations with names like “the Bridal Couple”, “Glass Flower Fantasy”, “Weird Cango Candle” and “the Hanging Shawl”. Here you will find some of the biggest stalagmite formations in the world set in Precambrian (4500 million years ago) Limestone.

Together the chambers and tunnels of the Cango Caves extend over 4km, placing them among the largest caves in the world. Your experienced, knowledgeable, English-speaking guide will take you to the main chambers and the front parts of the cave during your visit, and you can even opt to go into the narrower and in-depth part of the caves on a more adventurous tour.

I adore Africa and have lived and worked in South Africa as well as travelling across the wider region. Spotting a leopard during a night safari at Nambiti Private Game Reserve is definitely an experience I'll remember forever.
