The Battlefields

Fancy a holiday with a difference, with captivating historic sites, beautiful beaches and wild bushland? South Africa’s Battlefields has all this and more, and despite its name, you’ll get the chance to balance up a day of hard-hitting sightseeing with spectacular, peaceful views and a glorious coastline. The area got its name from the bloody wars fought between the British, Boer and Zulu warriors in the late nineteenth century. Today, you’ll find over 82 museums, remembrance sights and historic forts dotted across the area.

All this gives The Battlefields an undeniably haunting feel, with a heavy curtain of silence across many points, peppered with scattered military relics from a bygone age and cairns for fallen fighters. But all this is countered with the supreme natural beauty of the land, with its soaring mountains, sweeping bushland and blue skies. You’ll find many lodges in this spellbinding backdrop, often run by Zulu people, giving travellers a peaceful spot to unwind, complete with pools and terraces overlooking the jaw-dropping plains.

Just as you’d expect from South Africa, there are a rich variety of wildlife reserves in the area to spend time at too. With those such as Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park protecting precious species like the white rhino, they’re the place to catch a glimpse of some of the world’s most wondrous animals and birds, in complete harmony with their natural environment.

Head out to the coast, and you’ll be greeted by picture-perfect stretches of sand and cool little beach towns, like snazzy Umhlanga Rocks, located near Durban. Here you can spend time in beautiful colonial hotels, and spot dolphins off the coast. If you want to end your holiday in style, this is the kind of place to do it. Sunny climes, the warm Indian Ocean and cocktail from a classy bar will certainly cement your holiday as one to truly remember.
