Holidays to Karatu, Tanzania

Karatu is a great stop-off point for the area’s famous National Parks, if you come here you must visit the Ngorongoro Conservation AreaLake Manyara National Park and the Hadzabe tribe at Lake Eyasi. Take a safari tour from Karatu to any of the wildlife areas nearby where you can see the Big 5; hippos, blue wildebeest, zebras, elands, gazelles and primates. There are plenty of birds too, most notably gigantic flocks of flamingoes that arrive in their thousands during the wet season when the lakes are flooded.

Once you've had your fill of animals for the day, take a stroll through the town where you'll meet friendly locals. Practise your bartering skills buying fruits and vegetables, local handicrafts and authentic souvenirs at the myriad of rainbow-coloured stalls at the market. If you feel peckish, stop for a snack at one of the vendors and try chapatis, cassava or fried bananas, some delicious local delicacies.

Due to the town’s altitude and volcanic soil, Karatu coffee is among the best in Tanzania. The town is surrounded by coffee plantations which are well worth a visit. Coffee lovers can sample some at the local stalls or take a tour of the plantations. For those feeling more adventurous, Karatu also brews something a little stronger than coffee. Ask almost any local and they can point you through the maze of streets to the small brewery. Here you can watch beer being brewed and sample a cup.

Senior Africa Travel Designer
Let's talk
I grew up near the picturesque fishing village of Rye, in East Sussex. However, my heart has always been in Africa since I was a young girl. Having a South African father meant my love for the history and colour of this fantastic continent has been a prominent part of my life, and so getting to travel to seven different countries over the last few years has been a dream come true. One of my highlights was flying in the famous yellow bi-plane across Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya.
