Vanilla Tree, Spice Tour, Zanzibar
Half Day Spice Tour, Zanzibar
On collection from your hotel transfer with your driver and guide to the rural areas of Zanzibar. Meet your spice guide for a tour of the plantations and take a walk through the small spice farms. These gorgeous farms grow cloves, cinnamon, pepper, ginger, tamarind, menthol, vanilla, nutmeg, cardamom and many other spices. As well as spices the crops also produce many medicinal and ornamental plants as well as tropical fruits. Whilst you explore, discover and learn with your guide you will begin to understand where Zanzibar got its nickname as the “Spice Island”.
Historically Zanzibar produced three quarters of the total world’s supply of cloves. It was these spices that brought the Sultans of Oman across the Indian Ocean by traditional Dhow boat on the seasonal trade winds. Once you have had your fill of exploring the spice farms, discovering why traders from afar would travel the oceans to reach this magical island it is only fitting that you visit the Persian Baths. These were built in 1850 by Seyyid Said Bin Sultan, the first Sultan of Zanzibar who was drawn in by the fertile land and Spice trade. Seyyid built the Persian Baths for his wife, Princess Shehrzard, who was the granddaughter of Fateh Ali Shah of Persia.
This half-day experience provides an insight into local life, history as well as the opportunity to try some traditional Swahili cuisine. When you have had your fill both literally and figuratively return to your hotel to reflect on the sensational experience you have just had.
