Stone Town Walking Tour, Zanzibar
On collection from your hotel, transfer to the capital of Zanzibar, Stone Town to begin your half day tour of the sights, history and rich cultural heritage of this old trading city. Walk the streets of Stone Town accompanied by an informative and knowledgeable guide to follow in the footsteps of Zanzibar’s famed local, Freddie Mercury, lead singer of the rock band Queen.
The walk will show you living evidence of a rich cultural heritage where Arab, Indian, Persian and European influences blend with local African Tradition. You will pass historic buildings with elaborately carved wooden doors shaded by balconies, loggias and verandas above the narrow winding streets.
Starting in Stone Town walk with your guide towards the Anglican Cathedral and onto the Old Slave Chambers and market, continue on to the High Court Building. Follow the coastline past the old German Consulate to Africa House (formerly the English Club), Tippu Tips House and Kelele Square. Continue along the coast past Mercury House, the Old British Consulate, an Orphanage and onto the Old Fort which was built by Arabs for defence against the Portuguese. Opposite the Old Fort is the Forodhani Gardens where there is a local evening food market, a feast for the senses. Continue inland again to the House of Wonders (Beit Al Ajaib) built in 1883 and then onto the Sultan Palace Museum (Beit-el-Sahel) originally built for members of the Sultans family. Head out along the coast to the Old Dispensary whilst admiring the views of the Old Harbour. All the while passing town markets filled with tropical fruits, vegetables, spices, fresh fish, trinkets and gorgeous traditional architecture and people.
Once you have had your fill of walking amongst the comprehensive views transfer back to your hotel and reminisce on a magnificent day out.
