Holidays to Rwenzori Mountains National Park, Uganda
Glaciers, cloud forests and snow-topped mountains are not what typically come to mind when you think of exploring Africa. Yet in Uganda’s stunning Rwenzori Mountains National Park, this is exactly what you can expect to see, set against a crisp blue sky and framed with rich and unusual vegetation.
Home to an enormous number of species, this vast park consists of a bewildering variety of ecosystems. Trekkers will begin their adventure in tropical rainforests and gradually ascend through bamboo forests, moorlands and cloud forests into surreal landscapes dotted with alpine vegetation, with brightly-coloured moss coating the rocks and thick lichen hanging from laden branches. The bizarre outline of giant lobelias creates a surreal landscape that seems pulled straight out of a fairy-tale.
The backdrop of the dramatic cliffs and snow-capped peaks of Africa’s third-highest mountain is breathtaking, and makes the challenging climb to over 5,000 metres above sea level more than worthwhile.
But the most extraordinary thing about this park is its diverse fauna. Around 240 species of birds and 70 species of mammal can be spotted here, a number of which are unique to this mountain range.
Cottages and mountain lodges offer cosy accommodation and serve hearty local food, that will fill intrepid trekkers with the energy they need to reach the high peaks. Experienced, professional local guides will lead you over rope bridges, across walkways and onto the meandering paths of the Rwenzori Mountains, pointing out the myriad plants, creatures and natural wonders that make this park truly unforgettable.
