Holidays to Livingstone, Zambia
Sat within the confines of a beautiful and expansive national park, the forceful cascades of the Victoria Falls are made up of five separate waterfalls, stretching more than 1,700 metres across the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The Zambezi River plummets over a sharp cliff, crashing powerfully into a gorge below, known as the Boiling Pot. This treacherous whirlpool is the focal point for one of the park’s most embarked upon hikes. Make your way down the steep descent and, on a guided tour, you can paddle across by raft and immerse yourself into the natural pools.
Another significant water spot is the Devil’s Pool - and it’s not for the faint hearted. Propped high above the significant plummets of the falls, when the water levels are low in the drier months (mid-August to January), you will see exhilarated tourists swim out to the edge, stopped by the naturally-shaped walls of rock that stop them being carried over the formidable torrents towards the 100-metre drop.
With the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park opening at 6am, getting here early can near-guarantee you a glimpse of a spectacular sunrise as it ascends above one of the world’s most jaw-dropping natural marvels. Although the park closes at 6pm, if you’re visiting the cooler months, when the darkness drawers in earlier, you may be lucky enough to see a rare moonbow (lunar rainbow) as it shines majestically over the Rainbow Falls – the tallest of the collection of falls.
Whatever time you may be visiting, you’ll find that the park is teeming with exceptional treks that will carry you along the cliffs and bring you to once-in-a-lifetime vantage points including the Devil’s Cataract, Horseshoe Falls and Main Falls – which is the strongest and widest of them all.
Some of the trail will take you below the Victoria Falls Bridge, which links the two Southern African countries. Here you can bungee towards the rapid white waters of the gorge below, falling between the lush green forestry with nature visible for as far as the eye can see.
The sheer expansiveness of the falls, gorges and surrounding parklands allows for plenty of opportunity to explore a modern-day natural wonder of the world. Whether it’s enjoying the feeling of insignificance as you stand beneath the rippling curtains, standing on top of the world as you take in the sprawling panoramas or pushing your exhilaration levels to the max with a bungee jump or river rafting excursion, Victoria Falls is a magnificent, cascading spectacle that will take your breath away.
