Holidays to Shiwa Ng-andu, Zambia

Surrounded by rugged hills and spread out over a huge 23,000 acres of northern Zambia, the Shiwa Ng’andu estate is like no other place in the country. Originally built by British aristocrat Stewart Gore-Browne in the early 1900s, this sprawling estate combines classic English-style design with natural African beauty, making for a setting that seems plucked from the history books.

It’s fitting, then, that one of the main reasons people are so attracted to Shiwa Ng’andu is that is gives a fascinating insight into Zambia’s history. The Shiwa House, a decadent mansion that has been partially restored, offers an honest glimpse of Africa’s uncomfortable colonial past, and the owners have opened up the house’s extensive historical archives.

For all its man-made appeal, much of what charms visitors to Shiwa Ng’andu is steeped in the natural world. This is most evident at the stunning Lake Ishiba Ng’andu. Translating from the local Bemba language as "lake of the royal crocodile", it’s one of the largest privately owned bodies of water in Africa, perfect for relaxing boat trips – and it comes alive with romance at sunset. There are also rolling hills to explore and walking trips to the summit of Nachipala Bareback Hill reward visitors with breathtaking views across the estate.

For those seeking a bit more action, the estate also offers a wild side. The on-site game reserve is home to some of the area’s most beautiful animals, from Sitatunga antelope to blue duikers and over 200 species of birds. The best way to explore the landscape and get close to its wildlife is with a natural approach – a horseback safari led by expert guides.

Just when you think this place couldn’t get any more idyllic, the estate reveals the ace hidden up its sleeve – the Kapishya Hot Springs. Surrounded by towering raffia palms and lush greenery, this sparkling pool bubbles with natural hot water which leads out to the tranquil Manshya River. It’s a real slice of paradise set within an estate that constantly exceeds the imagination, and it's the perfect place to unwind with a soak after a day of adventure.

I adore Africa and have lived and worked in South Africa as well as travelling across the wider region. Spotting a leopard during a night safari at Nambiti Private Game Reserve is definitely an experience I'll remember forever.
