Holidays to South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

The high concentration of wildlife in South Luangwa National Park has earned it a reputation as one of the world’s greatest sanctuaries, but this does little justice to the experience of being among some of the world's rarest and most fascinating species. Sitting to the east of Zambia’s Luangwa River valley, the park is a haven for big game, native mammals and exotic wetland birds.

With an experienced guide you can venture on foot into the park's heartlands and witness the territories and natural behaviours its many inhabitants on a unique walking safari.

Watch the elephants as they cool themselves in the Oxbow Lagoon or observe the majestic giraffes as they graze on the leafy acacia canopies. From a safe distance, you may catch a glimpse of a lion pride, a leap of leopards or a herd of buffalo. Scuttling warthogs and bouncing antelope add movement to a dusty, hazy backdrop, and, if you’re lucky, you might spot a dazzle of zebras, with their black and white patterns vividly contrasting against the arid savannah grasslands.

Boat safaris are another way to explore the expansive park and are popular in the rainy months when the waters are much higher. Intense concentrations of wildlife sit leisurely among the beds and marshes of the Luangwa River, which is teeming with crocodiles and hippos. You’ll meander slowly past them on an upstream tour, lazing alongside pelicans, yellow-billed storks and carmine bee-eaters that nest on the banks of the river.

Kawaza Village, which sits on the periphery of the park, is home to a Kunda tribe who live peacefully in traditional clay huts with thatched roofs. Although a working farming village, tourists are invited to stay and enjoy a flavour of the local culture and customs. Experience the heritage of the surrounding lands through the eyes of these friendly indigenous people. As children play happily in the open spaces, the tribespeople peddle their colourful handicrafts, making it the ideal spot to pick up gifts and mementos of a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
