Holidays to Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

Far from human settlements and major towns, Mana Pools National Park is in the northernmost reaches of Zimbabwe. This stunning, unspoilt landscape is filled with some of Africa’s most loved animals, which are free to roam these vast forests and floodplains uninterrupted across the Zambian border.

The easiest way to get around Mana Pools National Park’s 2,200 square kilometres is by car. You can book a place on one of Mana Pools' many safari tours and explore the park with an experienced guide.

The park’s most popular game-viewing roads run along the Zambezi River, where diverse wildlife congregates all year round in search of water. Here is were you are almost guaranteed to see some game, including African elephants, buffalo, zebras and lions.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar Wetlands of international importance, Mana Pools National Park is a refuge for some of Zimbabwe’s most endangered animals, such as the eastern black rhinoceros, brown hyena and leopard. It also has abundant birdlife with over 450 species of resident and migratory birds recorded, including African skimmers and African fish eagles.

Taking its name from the word for "four" in the local language, "mana" refers to the number of permanent pools located within the park. Long Pool is the biggest at six kilometres long and sustains a large population of hippos and Nile crocodiles.

During the wet season, the vast floodplains of Mana Pools National Park turn into a network of lakes that are believed to sustain the highest concentration of game on the continent. If you’re visiting at this time of year, a canoe safari along the Zambezi River and lakes is not to be missed.

Walking safaris are also available and nature lovers will especially enjoy the full moon tours that involve a three-day hike through the park. If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the nature that makes Zimbabwe so special, Mana Pools National Park will go above and beyond your wildest expectations.

I adore Africa and have lived and worked in South Africa as well as travelling across the wider region. Spotting a leopard during a night safari at Nambiti Private Game Reserve is definitely an experience I'll remember forever.
