Holidays to Koh Kong, Cambodia

Koh Kong Province, a vast region near the Thai border in the south-west of Cambodia, offers everything an adventurous ecotourist could want. Home to lush rainforest, untouched coastline, remote mountains and native wildlife – elephants, sun bears and leopards – travelling here will make you feel like a true explorer.

Koh Kong City is a great base for accessing the area’s many attractions. Set on the banks of the Prek Koh Pao River, it has plenty plenty of restaurants and hotel, as well as a two kilometre-long bridge linking it to Thailand, making it a handy stopover point for onward travel. One unmissable excursion is Koh Kong island, a relatively short hop from the city by boat. Famed for its secluded white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters, you can swim or snorkel with shoals of tropical fish or just watch the water from the hot sands.

Covering 260 square kilometres, Peam Krasaop Wildlife Sanctuary is only seven kilometres from the city, but you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away. This expansive area of mangrove forest is part of the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor, and provides protected grounds for a diverse range of aquatic and avian life. You can access the sanctuary from Boeng Kayak village via a series of elevated platforms, suspension bridges and walkways. There’s also an observation tower here which takes you high above the treeline. The best way to see the area though is by boat. You’ll be taken deep into the twisted trees, passing floating fishing villages and, if you’re really lucky, you’ll spot some saltwater crocodiles or those elusive Irrawaddy dolphins.

The Tatai River and Waterfall is the area’s other main attraction. This serene river snakes through the Cardamom Mountains, with sloping, densely forested banks each side. You can easily while away a day swimming and splashing in the cool pools, and picnicking on the rocks. In the dry season you can even stand on top of – and underneath – the cascading falls.
