Holidays to Tmatboey, Cambodia

Around 45 kilometres north of Preah Vihear city in the Northern Plains of Cambodia is the remote village of Tmatboey. Set in the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary, this flagship site is at the heart of an ecotourism program established by the Ministry of Environment and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Cambodia Program. The key objective of the project is to conserve Cambodia’s endangered bird species, particularly the Giant Ibis – Cambodia’s national bird. With under 150 left in the world, the habitat created here is critical to the survival of this species.

There’s plenty of other wildlife to be found here including woodpeckers, owls, eagles and butterflies, and a walk round the  site affords you beautiful views over the lowlands and wetlands and provides plenty of opportunity for bird-spotting.

Accommodation here is limited to one rustic ecolodge. While basic, they're clean and comfortable with en-suite bathrooms, mosquito nets and fans.

Highlights

  • Spot endangered wildlife

  • Support conservation work by staying at the ecolodge
