Holidays to Litang, China

At 4,000 metres above sea level, and several hours away from the nearest city of Kangding, you could say that the historic valley town of Litang is closer to heaven than modern China.

There is an aura to this part of the world. Perhaps it’s its lofty location, its deep sense of spirituality or the palpable sense of history that lingers here? Aptly nicknamed ‘the town in the air’, Litang sits on the edge of a beautiful grassland valley and is surrounded by picturesque grassy hills populated with yak and nomadic herders. While reaching this high-altitude haven is no mean feat, it’s worth the toil to experience the profound atmosphere and vast scenery.

Litang is in Sichuan Province and acts as the administrative seat of Litang County. It’s a significant centre of Tibetan culture and famous for being the birthplace of several Dalai Lama. The town is alive with colour and activity, with shepherds converging on Litang’s markets to trade with the Tibetan people.

The people are arguably the greatest attraction. Very few will speak any English, but you’ll be greeted with the warmth and generosity of an old friend. It makes exploring the streets of Litang all that more special when your smiles are returned tenfold and a passing ‘Tashi Delek’ – a Tibetan greeting – surprises the locals.

While you’re here, be sure to visit to the Ganden Thubchen Choekhorling Monastery. It was built to the north of the town by the third Dalai Lama in 1580 and boasts some of Litang’s best views of the valley. If your next destination is Daocheng, stop off at the Jiage Shenzhen Lamasery. It’s a small temple at the foot of a holy cliff with a maze of caves and passages to explore.
