Holidays to Luang Prabang, Laos

Sitting between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers is the stunning ancient town of Luang Prabang, known as the heart of Laos. Thanks to its protected status, development is limited and kept in line with existing architecture, ensuring the charm of this tiny town is preserved for years to come. Start your trip with a climb up hundreds of stairs (don’t say we didn’t warn you!) past shrines and shady trees to the top of Mount Phousi, where you’ll be wowed by the 360 degree views of the city and out to the mountains beyond. The golden temple of Wat Chomsi at the top dates back over 200 years, and although it can get busy in late afternoon when the sun sets, it’s well worth the effort.

If you want to learn more about Laotian history, it’s worth spending a few hours at the Royal Palace Museum, which is packed with various exhibits of religious objects, murals and paintings tracing the varied past of the country. Observe Buddhist rituals each morning during Tak Bat, when hundreds of saffron-robed monks make their way through the city to collect food offered by the locals. Be respectful to the Monks - don’t use flash photography, and observe the years-old tradition in silence.

Set within the forest, the cascades of Kuang Si waterfalls pour over the steep hillside creating secluded pools of turquoise water. If you don’t want to get your hair wet, wander along the lush nature trails that wind through the forest. 25 kilometres outside town, the Pak Ou Caves are one of the most respected holy sites in Laos. The caves have been turned into shrines dedicated to Buddha and the river spirit, with miniature statues packed into the two caverns.
