Exploring the Mekong;s Hidden Side, Luang Prabang
This half day tour is a great way to escape the busy city of Luang Prabang and venture into the peaceful countryside where you’ll find largely uninhabited land. First, hop on the ferry boat and cross the Mekong River to explore the western banks of the river before riding on tuk-tuk to the ancient temple of Wat Long Khong. It’s located directly across the river from Wat Xieng Thong and was once the Kings retreat for when he wanted to escape the city for some peace and quiet.
Moving away from the temple and heading further into the countryside, the tour will take you though many Khmu villages, untouched by the modern world. The friendly villagers survive by living off the land, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
One village to encounter is Hmong village of Ban Pak Leung then back onto the river again to the next village, the pottery village of Ban Chan. The skilled villages here make pottery, bricks and terracotta tiles using ancient methods. If you’re lucky you can try and create something for yourself with the help of the local villagers. From Ban Pak Leung, it’s back on board a boat along the winding river back to Luang Prabang.
