Belize is a little country on the eastern edge of Central America with the Caribbean Sea lapping its shores. Thanks to its British heritage, Belize has its own identity that sets it apart from its neighbours, mixed with distinct influences of Kriol, Spanish, Garifuna and, of course, the captivating civilisation of the ancient Maya.
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the second largest barrier reef in the world, running for 190 miles along Belize's Caribbean coast to Guatemala and Honduras. Its fascinating display of coral, tropical fish and turtles, and subaquatic caves - including the famous Blue Hole - are a huge draw for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. Combine days of underwater explorations with relaxed island living on Belize’s cayes of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, spending your time kayaking and windsurfing, or basking in hammocks next to the turquoise sea.
Inland, Belize is relatively untouched. The Cayo District and Pook's Hill are ripe for Indiana Jones style adventures, dotted with archaeological sites including Xunantunich and Cahal Pech, which date back thousands of years. Giant steps lead to the tops of tall stone temples for far-reaching vistas over the jungle. You can discover excavated tombs and the sophisticated hieroglyphs within them, or descend into the caves to see where the Maya kings performed rituals to their gods. Modern-day jungle adventures await in the form of river kayaking, zip lining and cave tubing.
The Toledo district in the south is the least developed region in the country, offering wildlife and outdoor adventures galore in its national parks. The Maya make up over half of Toledo’s population and the ways in which their ancestors lived can still be experienced today. Keen hikers will spot spider monkeys, anteaters, toucans and green iguanas on their rambles through the rainforests, while and adrenaline junkies can enjoy enjoy tubing on the river, or whizz above it on a zipline!
