Colourful houses in Cartagena, Colombia
Colombia is emerging to be one of the hottest destinations in South & Central America, with so much to offer; from rare wildlife and diverse cuisine to wild dancing and thriving nightlife. If you're a history buff, you'll love Bogotá. Filled with museums and interesting architecture, this capital city houses the world's largest collection of gold. If your love for history is more Indiana Jones-esque, trek through the jungle to find Ciudad Perdida – coined as the ‘Lost City’. It was only rediscovered in the 1970s, after its disappearance during the Spanish conquest. The perfectly-preserved heritage town of Villa de Leyva is a must-see for historians too, with its cobblestone streets and luscious courtyard transporting you back to the colonial era.
If you have a heart for adventure, explore Pereira. This scenic location is excellent for mountain biking, hiking and horse riding, as well as ice and rock climbing. The surrounding Coffee Region also offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation, thanks to a host of coffee plantation tours and colonial towns, where you can enjoy a leisurely break.
You may not regard Columbia as a beach holiday destination, but once you step foot on Tayrona's golden sands, you'll soon reconsider. Spend your days snorkelling amongst the colourful marine life and feast on fresh seafood. Off the northern coast lies the quaint and mountainous Caribbean island – Providencia – offering a slice of paradise for the chance to unwind.

When to go to Colombia
Colombia is close to the equator, meaning temperatures are pretty stable throughout the year. Colombia does get some rain though, so the best time to go overall is between December and March when the rainfall is at its lowest. However as with most tropical countries, the rain is followed by bursts of sunshine – so if you don't mind getting wet, you can enjoy Colombia all year round.
