Holidays to The Amazon, Ecuador

From the sweeping canopies of the rainforest to the winding banks of the rivers, the Ecuadorian Amazon is a preserved natural wonder and a spectacular holiday destination. This thriving forest makes up the eastern portion of Ecuador and is an excellent place to begin an Amazon jungle exploration.

Getting to the heart of this part of the forest is often done by boat from Quito, but there are also buses available for those who prefer a slower scenic route to the heart of this lush and fertile part of the forest. With over 1,100 species of plants and trees in only 62 acres, this is one of the most dense places on earth for plant life – a staggeringly beautiful place that attracts adventurers and sightseers alike.

There are four national parks in the Ecuadorian Amazon, but the most spectacular is the Yasuni National Park – thought to be the most biodiverse place on earth. The park is nestled in the Napo moist forests ecoregion and is mainly a vast rainforest. Guided hikes through this magical terrain are extremely popular, and with good reason. Your guide will talk you through the history of the land, as well as the various plants that are encountered along the trail and their medicinal properties. Yasuni is also a hotbed for birdlife, and many visitors spend at least a few days spotting them.

Along the river in Yasuni there are more than 150 amphibian species alone and it’s easy to be overcome by the Earth’s wonder in this hub of life. Boat tours are another superb way to see the rainforest and get a sense of the iconic Amazon rainforest. These are long and leisurely, and are ideal for spotting fish, birds and even caimans. You’ll be told many stories about the river and the land that you’re exploring.

After a day of hiking, a wonderful way to wind down is to camp under the stars. In a forest that’s teeming with life, there are designated camping spots for those who wish to get the authentic explorer experience but within the realms of safety. Sleeping on the bed of one of the most famous natural wonders on Earth is not for the faint hearted, but spending the night under a blanket of shimmering stars with the animals, birds and plants for company, is a truly unforgettable experience.

There are also plenty of animal tours on offer for most of the year, and you’ll have the chance to spot monkeys, macaws and bats, plus a whole host of other mammals, reptiles and birds. These adventures will lead you around particular parts of the rainforest floor as you hunt for a glimpse of these beauties in their natural habitat.

The Amazon rainforest is a magical place like no other, to be explored carefully and leisurely. A place full of life, where you can uncover the secrets of the jungle.
