Vacations to Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Open skies, swampy springs and dry, dusty earth as far as you can see, topped by the impressive Mt Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is a landscape you won't forget.

Home to hundreds of animals including the "Big 5" as well as wildebeest, zebra, cheetah, hyena and many more. Amboseli is best-known for its large herds of free-roaming elephants, said to be some of the biggest elephants and herds in Africa. If you're a birdwatcher, you'll find yourself in paradise, with over 400 species of birds recorded here including but not limited to pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, cranes and raptors. In addition to the sweeping vistas, birding and magnificent wildlife, Amboseli National Park is surrounded by Maasai communities, offering opportunities for visitors to meet the local tribes and learn more about their unique and traditional way of life.

Just under 400 square kilometers in size, Amboseli is part of a larger ecosystem that spans the Kenya/Tanzania border. The landscape is dominated by Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 5,895 meters. Amboseli National Park provides some of the best views of Africa's iconic peak. While the tip of the mountain is often covered in clouds; the clouds melt away in the early morning or as dusk falls and you're rewarded with stunning vistas. It's these magnificent views coupled with Amboseli's reputation as one of the best places to see elephants at close range that makes the national park such a favorite. Its reputation was crowned in 1991 when it was declared to be a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.

I really do think that Kenya is one of the most adventurous and fun safari destinations. Flying in a bi-plane over Lewa WIldlife Conservancy with a birds eye view of the giraffe and elephant below, I felt like I’d gone back in time to an older safari era.
