Vacations to Lamu Island, Kenya
Untouched by mass tourism, Lamu Island is a special, secret paradise for those in search of a relaxing beach vacation and a taste of a new, beguiling culture. With beautiful, deserted beaches, a bustling, traditional town centre and a close-up look into age-old Swahilian customs and quirks, it’s no wonder why the area is quickly becoming the destination of choice for those interested in exploring East Africa.
There is no doubt that the wind-swept beaches, and resultant sand dunes, are the island’s main attraction. Unlike most other tropical gems, there’s no need to share this sunshine nirvana with anyone else. For the most part, Lamu Island and its beaches remain undiscovered and unspoiled, making it the ideal spot for taking long, leisurely strolls and getting lost in your thoughts with only the crashing waves and the enthusiastic seagulls to distract you.
Lamu Town, which is more than 700 years old, allows for an adventure into the unknown and is where you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the authentic Swahilian way of life. It has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts an array of traditional markets, gorgeous coral stone homes, an ancient fort and a multitude of narrow alleyways to explore - just wide enough for the donkeys to get through.
If the main goal is to escape fast-paced Western living, there’s no better place to be. Lamu Island is completely devoid of 21st century ‘essentials’, with sprightly donkeys (there are over 6000 of them) and dhow boats being the only available modes of transport. In fact, there are just two cars in existence on the island – one for the governor and the other an ambulance (for the donkeys!). Hop onboard a dhow boat around Lamu Island and cruise through the archipelago for stunning vistas, fresh ocean air and complete contentment.
