Vacations to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya
If you want to understand the work that goes into conservation, as well as enjoy an epic safari, you won't be disappointed with Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Formed in 1995 this wildlife sanctuary incorporates the Ngare Ndare Forest and spreads out across an area of 62,000 acres. Today it is considered one of the best spots of wildlife watching in all of Kenya.
Lewa has lived many lives. It was once a cattle ranch, before morphing into a guarded black rhino sanctuary and today it is the HQ of a non-profit wildlife conservancy. As well as carrying out conservation work, Lewa also has its very own education program to help develop schools and students.
But most people come for the animals. It is rated as one of the top spots for wildlife-watching in Kenya and unlike the country’s national parks, where off-road driving is banned, the guides here will take you very close. Lewa boasts one of the highest densities of wildlife in Kenya and is home to 12% of the country’s black and white rhinos. It also houses the world’s biggest population of Grevy’s zebra. On a typical safari you might also spot herds of elephants, lions, giraffes, cheetahs, leopards, rhinos, buffaloes and even packs of wild dogs. Bird watchers will be pleased to hear more than 400 species call Lewa home.
You can tailor your trip to Lewa to suit your mode of travel. You might like to indulge in a luxury safari, or maybe you would prefer to camp fireside and dip in the pool. You could go wildlife watching on horseback, or you could spend your time checking out the epic conservation work carried out here. And if you’re looking for a romantic spot to propose? Look no further – this is where Prince William popped the question to Kate Middleton!
