Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Nairobi

The Daphne Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is involved in many wildlife commitments including the Orphans Project, which you experience first-hand at the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. The main aim of this project is to protect the lives of orphaned elephants and rhinos who are ultimately released back into the wild.

On collection from your hotel, transfer with your guide to the orphanage, located on the outskirts of Nairobi in the grounds of Daphne Sheldrick's home. On arrival, meet the people who handle and care for the baby elephants followed by the orphans themselves. This orphanage provides a safe haven for these babies until they reach an age where they can be released and reintroduced into the wild. The babies will be bottle fed and enjoy mud baths while you learn about the plight of elephants throughout Africa with Kenya in the spotlight. You'll learn about the individual elephants and each of their stories. The Daphne Sheldrick Orphanage employees and elephant carers will happily chat with you about their conservation efforts and the challenges that Kenya’s elephants face in the wild. While you are at the orphanage you may also spot the resident warthogs, giraffe and rhino.

Before you depart, visit the gift shop where all proceeds go towards conservation efforts and caring for the orphaned babies. There is also the opportunity to foster an orphan that you have seen during your visit should you wish. Once you have seen and done all that you wanted to, head back to your hotel with your guide and vehicle after a truly tear-jerking and heart-warming experience.

Let's talk
I really do think that Kenya is one of the most adventurous and fun safari destinations. Flying in a bi-plane over Lewa WIldlife Conservancy with a birds eye view of the giraffe and elephant below, I felt like I’d gone back in time to an older safari era.
