Vacations to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya

They say the sky is bigger in Africa – find out for yourself during a visit to magical Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a haven for wild African animals set to the backdrop of majestic Mount Kenya. Beginning its life as a beef ranch in the 1940s with famous British settler Lord Delamere at the helm, the site was transformed into a game reserve in 1988 to act a sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife. Eventually reaching over 90,000 acres, the sizeable reserve is now a non-for-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation of this unique habitat.

A leading site of rhino conservation, the conservancy is home to both black and white rhinos, and protects the last three remaining Northern White Rhinos on earth within a 700-acre endangered species enclosure that's open to visitors. The area is also the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa with a population of 113 of these magnificent beasts, meaning you've a high chance of spotting one of these rare animals during your visit.

Dreaming of seeing the rest of the Big Five too? Well, there's a good chance your dreams will be answered, as Ol Pejeta is also home to elephants, lion, buffalo, and the elusive leopard, as well as dozens of other species including cheetahs and hyena.

Six lion prides inhabit the park, and those searching for an extra-special safari experience can sign up to go lion tracking with one of Ol Pejeta's experienced rangers. You'll help capture information about the members of the pride and contribute to lion conservation in the process.

Although located on the equator and often warm during the day, Ol Pejeta can get cold due to its high altitude, so don't forget to pack layers for those magical early morning safaris and night game drives.
