Holidays to Tsavo National Park, Kenya
Welcome to the pride-lands. Tsavo National Park is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the biggest in the world. Split into East and West, and divided by a railway line, the park is over 20,000 square kilometres and has a diverse range of landscapes.
Dramatic scenery isn’t the only thing the park has to offer. Tsavo has been open since 1948 and it's one of the oldest safari parks in Kenya. Historically Tsavo was famous for man-eating lions when the railway line was being constructed in the 19th Century. This was followed by a bout of devastating levels of poaching in the 1980s, adding to its reputable name. However, among the vast scenery and dense foliage, you’ll still find a plethora of impressive wildlife here.
If you’re looking for raw wilderness, this is a great place to experience it. The park is teeming with activity and it’s easy to spot lions, rhinos, leopards and even buffalo on your safari around it. Keep your eyes peeled for the park's renowned 'red' elephants - the elephants in this park are covered in red dust, giving them an unusual hue. Tsavo is also excellent for birdlife, with over 500 species recorded here including lovebirds, sacred ibis, crowned cranes, the endangered corncrake and near-threatened Basra reed warbler.
Take some time to explore the Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow at 290 kilometres long and the Lugard Falls to experience the white water rapids of the Galana River. While you're there, you may spot aardwolf, bushbaby, cheetah, gazelle, hyena, impala, jackal, monkey, and much, much more. Seek your own adventure in Tsavo National Park between the rocky peaks, natural springs and swampland.
