Rwanda Safaris & Vacations
Landlocked Rwanda in east Africa may be pretty small, but it packs a punch when it comes to gorgeous landscapes and extraordinary safari wildlife viewing opportunities. Rwanda is home to some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas, nestled in the bamboo forest of the magnificent Volcanoes National Park. These incredible animals live alongside elusive golden monkeys, and a trek through the misty park in the shadows of the Virunga volcanoes could have you coming face to face with both species. Chimpanzees are found in Rwanda too, and there are opportunities aplenty to track them in Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the oldest parks in Africa.
While the memories of the horrors of the genocide in 1994 linger (and can be further studied at Kigali’s Genocide Memorial), today, Rwanda is a warmly welcoming country that’s happy to showcase its natural assets. Seemingly endless mountains of tea plantations and terraced hills roll on and on across the verdant countryside. Spend some time on the shores of Lake Kivu – the inland beaches are some of the best you’ll find on the whole continent. The lake is a shimmering shade of dark sapphire owing to the depth of this mystical lake. You can swim, fish and kayak here, or a take a stroll around one of the lakeside villages.
