Vacations to Gisenyi, Rwanda

Located in Rwanda's Rubavu District in the Western Province, Gisenyi is one of the country's most appealing destinations. It is ideal for those who want to combine an authentic African experience or gorilla trek with a traditional beach vacation.

Gisenyi lies on the shores of gorgeous Lake Kivu, and the area features three beautiful sandy beaches along with several landscaped hotels and villas, overlooked by the mighty Mount Nyiragongo. Lake Kivu is the centrepiece of any experience at Gisenyi, with sunset boat cruises across the lake being one of the most popular pastimes for both locals and visitors.

If you fancy something a bit livelier, water sports adventures might be more your thing or perhaps a trek along the Congo-Nile trail. Encompassing fantastic scenery, the trail is one of the most popular routes for cyclists or hikers in east Africa.

Gisenyi features plenty of places to eat, from hotel restaurants to independent eateries. Popular local dishes include beef or tilapia fillets, fish tacos and banana cake. After a busy day trekking or hitting the lake, the beachside bars are taken over by DJs at the weekends, sending out African beats into the night along the beautiful coast - a suitably atmospheric end to the days spent in Gisenyi.
